Recycling Facility: SUEZ

How a unique partnership between SUEZ, French local authorities, and Medclair utilises innovative gas destruction to eliminate the industrial and environmental risks of discarded nitrous oxide canisters.

The Challenge: A Hidden Risk to Public Safety and Waste Facilities

The misuse of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for recreational purposes has increased sharply in recent years. Beyond the severe public health concerns, it has created a massive logistical and industrial hazard for the waste management sector. Used canisters are frequently abandoned in public spaces and end up in standard household waste streams.

When these canisters reach energy recovery facilities (incineration plants), they pose an immediate and severe danger. Under high heat, the pressurised canisters cause powerful explosions, leading to equipment damage, costly operational shutdowns, and significant safety risks for plant personnel. In France alone, these incidents are estimated to cost the waste industry between €35 and €40 million annually. At SUEZ’s Vedène facility alone, approximately 30,000 canisters are collected each year through household waste.

The Solution: Medclair’s Technology in a First-of-its-Kind Industrial Pilot

To confront this challenge head-on, global circular economy leader SUEZ, in partnership with the Vaucluse Prefecture, has deployed an unprecedented pilot project in Entraigues-sur-la-Sorgue. At the core of this industrial solution is Medclair’s innovative gas destruction technology.

Using Medclair’s proprietary technology, SUEZ can safely extract the residual nitrous oxide from the collected canisters. The gas is then broken down at a molecular level and converted into harmless nitrogen (N₂) and oxygen (O₂) – the natural main components of ambient air.

To maximise the efficiency of the project, SUEZ has integrated Medclair’s technology into a holistic, territorial strategy:

  • AI-Powered Detection: SUEZ utilises the AI-based Qualiwaste system to detect and sort out nitrous oxide canisters early in the waste collection flow.

  • Full Material Recycling: Once the canisters are safely emptied and the gas decomposed by Medclair's system, the metal canisters are fully recycled, supporting circular economy principles.

  • Prevention and Insight: Backed by a sociological study from LyRE to analyse usage patterns, the project incorporates targeted public awareness campaigns to prevent misuse and littering at the source.

The Result: Major Gains for the Environment, Economy, and Industrial Safety

Launched in 2025, this territorial partnership demonstrates how Medclair’s expertise in gas mitigation can be scaled and adapted to the waste management industry to build a safer, greener future.

  • Climate Impact: Nitrous oxide is a greenhouse gas nearly 300 times more potent than CO₂. Destroying the residual gas prevents massive volumes of harmful emissions from entering the atmosphere.

  • Enhanced Operational Safety: The risk of explosions and unscheduled downtime at SUEZ’s energy recovery facilities is drastically minimised.

  • A Scalable Framework: The industrial pilot aims to fully validate the technical, economic, and regulatory conditions required for a broader national and international rollout.
